Our Story
Pioneering Cancer Research in Somalia with Purpose and Vision
Founded in 2025 under the Oasis Group, the Oasis Cancer Research Institute (OCRI) emerged from a simple but powerful idea — to give Somalia its own center for cancer research, data, and innovation.
What began as a vision to strengthen cancer care has grown into a national initiative connecting scientists, healthcare professionals, and policymakers. Our story is one of local empowerment, ethical science, and the belief that every discovery made in Somalia can have a global impact.
Why OCRI Matters
1. Crisis
The rising cancer burden in Somalia, marked by late diagnosis and poor survival rates.
2. Ignorance
The critical absence of a national cancer registry, leaving the country without essential data to guide prevention and treatment.
3. Inequity
A stark global imbalance where 70% of cancer deaths occur in LMICs, yet these regions contribute less than 5% of global cancer research.

OCRI fills the gap created by brain drain and a lack of training, building local research capacity for a healthier future.
